As we have seen, exposing to the right enables us to get the maximum possible data into the image file but like all techniques it should not be used without thought. There are times when it may be better to use other approaches. For instance in street photography you need to work quickly, determining the exposure before pointing the camera anywhere near the subject can be the way to go. In this case I would take a reading from a neutral subject such as tarmac and lock the exposure - just like exposing slide film - and then use that exposure to make my picture.
