Expose to the Right  

In the old days, many of us used to shoot slide film. In fact I think I kept Fuji in business with the amount of Fujichrome I used. The golden rule when exposing slide film was not to blow out the highlights and if the shadows blocked up, never mind. Taking a meter reading from a grey card and possibly underexposing by half a stop would do it for the vast majority of situations.

With digital capture the golden rule is still not to blow the highlights but the rest of it has changed.
