This is a personal list of accessories that I find useful. I have no doubt that others would disagree. Don’t forget that the accessories that you need will depend on the type of photography you enjoy. A decent bag is essential. I like one that will protect the camera from being dropped and is big enough to carry a few essentials such as a spare battery and memory cards along with the camera itself. You also need basic cleaning equipment. A lens cloth and cleaning fluid along with a blower brush are often all that is needed. A stable tripod is a very useful accessory. Not only does this hold the camera still and eliminate camera shake it also slows down the picture making process. It forces the photographer to think about the shot far more than is necessary without the tripod. A tripod ensures far more accurate composition. A hotshoe mounted spirit level is a great aid for architectural photography and for images involving bodies of water. There is nothing worse than a picture when the water appears to be flowing out of one side of the frame. A cable release is also a help in eliminating camera shake. It also helps in portrait sessions because the photographer does not have to hide behind the camera to the same extent. It can help to develop a rapport between the photographer and the model. A flash gun is useful for low light photography but more especially if it can be taken off camera. Then it really comes into its own. You can take control of your lighting for portraits, still-lifes, etc. A reflector can be useful in many situations both on location and in the studio. If you have an off camera flash unit and a reflector you have a basic controllable lighting set up. |
